The Western Australian Zone of AOCRA has a growing junior development program with intentions to compete nationally and in the peak event - The Trans-Tasman Series and Gubby Gubby Championships with New Zealand “Waka Ama” juniors and western Pacific nations.
Geographe Outriggers started their inaugural junior development program in September 2015 with a group of 14 year-old boys and girls. The club aims to develop their junior paddlers in all outrigger disciplines from V12, OC6, OC2, OC1, and V1 for both marathon races and sprint races. As the club grows we will include other age categories such as Minnows (6-10yo), 12 and under, 16U, and 19U.
Outrigger canoeing is exciting, social and competitive. We teach the history of outrigger canoeing as it relates to Polynesian culture and we enter WA club regattas and organised fun paddling trips. Canoe handling, correct paddling technique, and race strategy are taught at training. There is also an emphasis on safety, fitness, teamwork, and concentration.
Outrigger canoeing is a lifelong sport and parents are welcome to get involved with the juniors and paddle with our senior crews. For new paddlers the first three sessions are free! Please click here for full membership costs and membership information for the upcoming 2019/20 season.
